mortar

On-Yomi: キュウ、グ — Kun-Yomi: うす、うすづ.く

Koohii stories:

1) [astridtops] 9-8-2006(69): I removed all the back to back staples and grinded them in a mortar to create metal dust.

2) [brendanmacdonald] 10-9-2008(55): The mortar bomb exploded, ripping the sun in half.

3) [kapalama] 21-3-2011(20): 臼歯 mortar (#2063 臼)キュウ,うす … Parts: Back to back Staples… Or Cracked 白 (cf. 興味 entertain (#1426 興), 輿入れ palanquin (#2860 輿), 新潟 ) … Note: this is simplified to 旧 in the Joyo characters. Ex: 児 =兒newborn babe (#58 児), 稲 =稻rice plant (#910 稲), but not in 潟 lagoon (#2039 潟) because it is a traditional place name (Niigata). In non-Joyo, the characters are written both ways: 焔 flames (#2546 焔) is often written 焰. … Note2: Stroke order varies since it is not Joyo.

4) [rowdyphantom] 26-3-2010(13): I went pictograph with this one: a cracked white rice grain–one that has been bashed in a mortar.

5) [billyclyde] 18-10-2007(7): Mortar is that goop, prepared on a board (which this pictographically resembles) that works like DOUBLE-STAPLES to hold bricks together.
